TODAY'S SPECIAL!

Irony, fast food, photography, a touch of OCD & a beautiful color story = the work of Julia Ziegler-Haynes. Her latest photography project gives my creative dick a boner. OHWOW is pleased to announce the publication of Today's Special by the Brooklyn-based artist and chef Julia Ziegler-Haynes. her book illustrates the final meals or "special meals,” requested by 24 death row inmates on the eve of their execution. Her intention in creating this work is to examine the human condition through the contrast of capital punishment and the forgiving gesture of granting one last request.

Enjoy.

Fascinated with the subject of the last meal, Ziegler-Haynes undertook extensive and emotionally exhaustive research through the public records of death row inmates. She then selected meals and painstakingly recreated each, arranging or cooking items exactly to the recorded likings and specifications of each prisoner. A brief detailing of the inmate's crime and penalty appears toward the end of the book, beside a thumbnail of its corresponding image.

"Essentially, these prisoners had become guests in my home. And so, despite having been immersed in the hideous details of each crime, I repeatedly found myself feeling empathetic towards them. Especially those whose requests were so meager," states Ziegler-Haynes. For example, one photograph depicts a black unpitted olive, another, a single cup of coffee.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS WERE.

Maurice Bernard Sendak (June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012). Brooklyn born.

It's been a real sad week for the Creeps...with all these fucking rad people dying and shit! Every year I get older I always have to ask myself – am I living my life to it's fullest? Am I good to those who appreciate me & are important in my life? Had I received enough n00dz from your daughters? Are there things I still need to accomplish? Youth is fucking amazing, never take that shit for granted.

That being said, today we celebrate the life of Mr. Maurice Sendak, better known for creating one of the greatest children's books I had the pleasure of growing up reading. It's kind of crazy to tell you that this book was my fucking bible as a little mark. I have this funny thing about children's books because I feel they are so sophisticated & written with multiple facets of life's lessons left for you to continually discover as you grow into adulthood.

They say your dreams are who you are. And that life is the real dream. Some twisted Matrix type shit right? Face Melter! Strange enough to this day I still believe I sail across seas into another secret land when I fall asleep. Maybe it's because I want to believe it. And maybe it's that Mr. Sendak believed it too. And making people believe in something you can't describe is what I define as true genius.

WELCOME TO HORRORLAND!

Time to twist it up as I haven't done a THROWBACK THURSDAYS retro post in a hot minute. If you know us, then you should know what we like. And if you like us, then you probably have liked the fuck out of R.L. Stine's infamous GOOSEBUMPS mini novels as a kid.

I kid you not I owned most of these fucking books. Think I donated them to the library or some shit. But I'll be honest, I never would have thought it would inspire me to create CREEP STREET 15 years later but like every weird & fucked up thing I'm into these days – it all starts to make sense when you start retracing the steps back to your childhood...

Which was YOUR favorite book?

I miss the shit out of Scholastic Book Club! Fuck your iPad!

SANDWICH BOOK.

Scanning + Sandwich = Scanwich! Pretty easy right? Fucking right it is. Amazing little concept now has a amazing little book worth buying. A book is sort of a sandwich too if you really think about it. They should just make a real sandwich book where every page is like a full bleed texture of meats & mayo & stuff you put on sandwiches. And the cover will be like a bread. Too obvious? :/

Here's my top 5!

And now that I think about it, I should probably have published the Creep Street Book of Spreads. Like vaginas though. Like every spread is literally a spread. Fuck yea I'm gonna do it! Don't steal my idea!

ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND.

See how author Nickolas Cook hacks (pun intended) Lewis Carroll's original story into odds & ends! The title alone was worth posting as I only discovered this book existed yesterday. I won't read it a) because I don't know how to, and b) I can pretty much put the pieces (again with the puns! genius!) together on how this book works. The cover is rad enough for a Creep Street tee, but we'll just half to flip it some other time :). Anyhoo, if you are bored & in the mood for some undead pokes at a classic fairytail, this one's for you.

"They were indeed a queer-looking party that assembled on the bank-the birds with draggled feathers, the animals with their fur clinging close to them, and all dripping wet, cross, and uncomfortable. All of them were covered in Alice's now cold and congealed blood, which made them even tastier looking to poor hungry Alice.

When little Alice follows the Black Rat down into the gaping darkness of an open grave, she falls and falls. And soon finds herself in an undead nightmare of rotting flesh and insanity. Venturing further into this land of zombies and monsters, she encounters characters both creepy and madcap along the way. But there's something else troubling poor Alice: her skin is rotting and her hair is falling out. She's cold. And she has the haunting feeling that if she remains in Zombieland any longer, she might never leave. Can Alice escape Zombieland before the Dead Red Queen catches up to her?"

LOCALS ONLY.

For some rad flicks and a trip down memory lane, pick up this new publication of photography from Hugh Holland - Locals Only. It's always dope to look back and see how skating evolved, the kids who changed everything, and would ultimately change your stupid self! So let's bring back the pureness and excitement that existed before we became obsessed with the internet, and all this weird fucking skate culture going around these days!

Which reminds me of the time I watched this movie way before I knew shit about skateboarding...a change for the better I'd dare fucking say!

MAC BOOKIN.

Now I usually don't ever do that typical hot product post shit, but fuckit I like this thing! Not very often you see some old fashioned clever shit being made nowadays. SO if you smell of rich mahogany and own many leather bound books, and got some loot to blow (mind you the CREEPS 4 HAITI Sale! still going on - the more you buy the more we give hint* hint*)...protect your err investment with some 'novel' shit! Get it?! HAR HAR!

--------------------------------

Which reminds me...J.D. Salinger creep on in the heavens homie! That book changed my life, kinda like most things you do in middle school, but we can't get into that.

They should make one dedicated to him with this sick ass classic cover:

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE...

are you as excited as us creeps are?! Not as excited as this muthafucka!!

via Amliv the Zombie Hunter

I still remember reading this shit 1000 times as a kid. Probably because it didn't have that many words. I felt like a badass only to find out that it was really telling me I'd get betrayed, killed and raped by big monsters if I ever ran away from home. All for a hug and a bowl of soup. Fuck my life.

Maurice Sendak: We Salute You.
